Amanda the Adventurer is a sinister and uncomfortable horror experience. This title should have been adorable! However, a creepy protagonist and a shy sheep help to create a bleak game.

While there’s absolutely a weird and creepy element at play, most of the experience revolves around escape room puzzling

Amanda The Adventurer presents a unique challenge offering some dark, creepy yet chuckle-worthy moments throughout its playthrough. It isn’t a massive game by any means and the gameplay loop is pretty short, but there are multiple endings if you want to try and find them out for yourself. It is a very well-designed puzzler ultimately with cleverly plotted and subtle hints through the brilliantly animated and petrifying cartoon. The price-point weighs in at a reasonable £7.49 which doesn’t break the bank for a couple of casual hours of fun. Will you brave it in the dark though like I did? If you’re impressed with this title then you’ll be pleased to hear the sequel has dropped onto Steam recently, so I’d imagine a console release is imminent for AtA2.

Amanda the Adventurer is certainly an interesting approach to the horror genre. It is worth playing this title at least for its unique atmosphere and unusual approach to gameplay. Nevertheless, don't expect an out-of-this-world scary experience from it. Although it is a horror game, it does not arouse such strong emotions.

Ultimately, Amanda the Adventurer is a great example of the ability to tell stories in horror games, relying on the kind of in-depth lore and techniques fans have come to love from similar viral sensations; and Amanda is a league above some of the others like Poppy Playtime and Garten of Banban

Amanda the Adventurer is a welcome indie addition to the Nintendo Switch catalogue, with a compelling narrative and intriguing puzzles. It challenges the conventions of what we see more commonly in the genre, opting for a psychological, narrative horror instead of a more "physical" approach to scares. Unlocking multiple endings turns the game more attractive but the details of the plot usually being too hidden may hinder the experience. Finally, it's necessary to remember that, despite all its merits, this title may not be for everyone, especially [not indicated] for players who prefer action and concrete threats.

The game is pretty fun and is mostly full of positives, except that the story is a huge disappointment after the demos, and there are some puzzles that don't make any sense. It's a unique game and can be worth buying when on sale, but not for the full £8.

Amanda the Adventurer will not please everyone, but it's a very niche experience. Hardcore horror fans who want a shorter experience and analog horror elements will have found their perfect title. (Review Policy)
