For run-and-gun loyalists, there’s actually quite a bit to appreciate. The game offers tight action, varied set of weapons, and level design that rewards players with patience and precision. It might not break new ground, but it absolutely holds its own within the genre. On the flip side, while the shmup sections are solid and enjoyable, they’re not a big enough part of the package to make this a must-play for shmup purists — it's too much effort to get there for too little of the good stuff.

Rendering Ranger R² [Rewind] for me is a testament to the ingenuity of 16-bit game design from the mid '90s and i'm gutted that I never played it first time around. It's definitely a must-play for all the run n gun maniacs out there and for less than a tenner this is absolute steal for your Nintendo Switch!

From stages that offer some of the best horizontal shooting action on the entire console without hesitation, to a fun romp of stages that still offer a lot of enjoyment even at the lowest lows, this game is an easy recommend for fans of SNES action games. Really if it was just the horizontal shooting levels, I’d even say it’s a game so good I could recommend to everyone.

A retro run-n-gun affair that’s a bit too muddy and clunky to really pull you in

Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] is part of a constellation of stars never before seen by the general public that finally gets its due spotlight. Even with a release three decades ago, the combination of mechanics and precise gameplay make it very attractive for those who would like to have a taste of the 90's in its natural state.

Despite an intense and often unforgiving difficulty and unclear emulation, I still had a good time playing through the blast from the past that is Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind]. It’s clear to me that Manfred Trenz is a very talented and creative developer, though perhaps one who isn’t very focused on balance in his adventures. Still, if you’re a fan of video game history and don’t mind getting your butt kicked repeatedly, you might want to check this out today.
