Late Review“Chains of Freedom probably isn't going to interest anybody other than big fans of the XCOM-like tactical genre. If you are that person, the combat here is good enough to keep you going until the end, but there's a fairly narrow window of appeal.”

Launch Window“Overall, I enjoyed my time with Chains of Freedom. Some players may find the constant struggle for resources in the early game a detriment to the overall experience, but once I got wind of what it was trying to accomplish in this respect and adjusted, things started to pick up.”

Launch Window“For fans of turn-based tactical games with a dystopian setting, "Chains of Freedom" still offers a worthwhile experience that impresses with its atmosphere, exciting story, and solid gameplay, even if it doesn't set new standards in all areas.”

Launch Window“When everything clicks, the payoff is real. But getting there involves a lot of filler, frustration, and flat performances. A mildly enjoyable strategy romp, just don’t expect it to break your chains.”

Launch Window“Chains of Freedom is a well-rounded tactical-RPG, sporting an excellent turn-based combat system and a surprisingly good story that only shows some hiccups nearing the end of the game. The level of difficulty is quite high, mainly because of the resource management necessary to even reach the later stages, bringing depth and a rising sense of tension to the whole experience.”

Launch Window“For what it's worth, Chains of Freedom is not a bad game at all. As a turn-based tactical adventure, it fulfils the brief sufficiently, with the sort of conflict and narrative that is simply par for the course. Being unable to offer anything genuinely new means that you really have to love the premise to see everything through, and at the end of the day, that's not for everyone.”

Launch Window“Not all Xcom-like games have to be the same, as shown by Chains of Freedom, a post-apocalyptic strategy game with a strong focus on story. It's a shame that the second half of the game is weaker.”

Launch Window“Chains of Freedom is a turn-based action game with incredible art and good storytelling, but its gameplay may be too familiar, missing opportunities to make its combat more exciting or original.”

Launch Window“Chains of Freedom is too caught up in its own macho army aesthetic to really have a connection with the player. Otherwise, it's a half-decent tactics game.”

Launch Window“Chains Of Freedom promises a lot both mechanically and narratively, but fails to deliver. Functional, but not exactly fun - there are better options out there for getting your tactical RPG fix.”

Launch Window“Chains of Freedom features some strategic depth in its turn-based combat, but is held back by weak storytelling, dull exploration, poor pacing, and combat that’s often dragged down by frustrating design choices.”

Early Review“The main problem with Chains of Freedom is that it never stakes its own claim. It doesn't carve out territory that feels unique and often feels more like an imitator of other games than something with its own personality. While the core mechanics are largely serviceable, without a unique angle, there are far greater entries in the turn-based tactics genre to spend your time with. Ultimately, the predictable narrative delivered by dull characters and the repetitive combat make this a difficult recommendation for all but the most die-hard fans of the genre.”
