Late Review“As you can tell, I very much enjoyed Chronicles of the Wolf. Yes, it’s derivative and takes a lot of style from the historic giants of the genre, but in my eyes it surpasses – or at the very least matches up to - those it apes. A visually and sonically beautiful creation that utilises tried and tested gameplay, this is a huge thumbs up from us at GF, and very much a contender for game of the year, blinking lovely stuff. 🐺Right, I’m off to kick a thirty-foot tall werewolf in the balls for making me drop my croissant.🥐”

Late Review“Chronicles of the Wolf is a beautifully crafted Metroidvania that, despite its flaws, achieves its goals by expertly blending classic genre elements into a cohesive and entertaining experience. While it introduces little new to the genre, it remains a worthy play for fans of action-platformers and Metroidvanias seeking a familiar yet polished adventure.”

Launch Window“Migami Games proves why they should be considered an authority when it comes to making Metroidvania games with Chronicles of the Wolf, a highly polished and utterly captivating game. It has an entertaining story, engaging gameplay, and challenging progression. The technical aspects evoke the great classics, with a large number of bosses, attack patterns to learn, and high-quality design. Without a doubt, this is a game that every fan of the genre should play right now.”

Launch Window“Chronicles of the Wolf is a confident, old-school Metroidvania that asks a lot of its players. Its DNA is from another gaming era, and simply being a fan of the genre won't guarantee you'll enjoy it. If modern quality-of-life features like marking your map or being gently nudged forward are preferable, there are better options elsewhere. But if you've got the patience to revisit a time when games were slower and more cryptic, and the pacing was a little more intense, Chronicles of the Wolf is like a rich, dark relic that you'll treasure. For every player put off by its demands, another will embrace it as a worthy challenge.”

Launch Window“Anyone who loves Metroidvanias, especially the classic "Castlevania" games, should definitely check out "Chronicles of the Wolf." The look, gameplay, and soundtrack instantly transport you to a dark, gothic, and monster-infested world in the South of France. Unfortunately, the game's running time is excessively long due to the game's backtracking, and the lack of save options only makes this more obvious.”

Launch Window“I loved Chronicles of the Wolf. It’s rare to find a game inspired by proto-Metroidvania NES adventure games. It’s also rare to find a game that looks like a Sega Genesis action platformer.”

Launch Window“As a throwback to the old 2D Castlevania games, Chronicles of the Wolf is serviceable and mostly effective. If you're after a nostalgia trip that doesn't have many ambitions to forge its own identity or take note of the quality of life improvements that metroidvanias have been honing since the 1990s, Chronicles of the Wolf will be a satisfying romp through the French countryside. However, the game isn't aspiring to anything more than a simple trip down memory lane, and would be hard to recommend for anyone not already a Castlevania fan or looking for something that evolves on past Metroidvanias rather than simply imitating them.”

Launch Window“Chronicles of the Wolf gets almost everything right in what it sets out to do. Despite its clear inspiration from Castlevania, it manages to establish its own identity, delivering a challenging, lengthy game filled with secrets and a thunderous soundtrack. For better or worse, it’s a classic adventure against darkness just like in the old days — and certainly one of the best of its kind.”

Launch Window“Chronicles of the Wolf surprised me positively. Representing its influences with pride, Migami Games delivered a captivating, fun metroidvania that hits all the base pillars, like narrative, ambientation and gameplay. Beyond nostalgia, the conclusion is that this perilous trip to XVIII Century Gévaudan is worth living for fans of the genre who aren't afraid of bidimensional haunted castles. After all, subduing the horrors that torment the area is long overdue.”

Early Review“Migami Games, together with PQube and PixelHeart, bring us a classic, old-school Metroidvania game. We play as Mateo Lombardo on a mission to uncover the secrets behind the beast that is ravaging several villages in the south of France. Despite its classic format, with the occasional glitch in the controls, the game manages to captivate players with a story that gets better as the hours go by...”

Early Review“Chronicles of the Wolf is still a great Metroidvania game for anyone who prefers slow-paced exploration, atmospheric storytelling, and gradual power boosts over pure combat challenge. You should be ready to stay still when you swing your sword.”

Early Review“Chronicles of the Wolf is a magnificent spiritual successor to the Castlevanias that followed the metroidvania structure. This game continually surprised me with the depth of its exploration, which is both challenging and intuitive. The retro feel of the experience may end up intimidating to some audiences, but if you enjoy side-scrolling action platformers in general don't let this rich and dark adventure pass you by.”

Early Review“Hugely inspired by Castlevania, Chronicles of the Wolf offers a fairly lengthy gothic adventure where players explore a dark, interconnected world to take down an evil menace. It looks nice, has a great soundtrack and is mostly fun to play, but there are some balancing and design issues that hold it back from greatness.”
