Late Review

The Edge of Fate starts Destiny's next chapter with ambitious goals but flawed execution. Its slower progression and repetitive mission design test players' patience, though it successfully sets the stage for future content that could recapture the magic of past years.

Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is meant to be the beginning of a new era for the series. In reality, however, you find yourself in a small location with new abilities that aim to refresh the familiar gameplay, but instead of moving the content forward, they more often than not just end up frustratingly slowing down the pace of the game. The constant solving of puzzles associated with them quickly becomes tedious. Overall, it's not the worst DLC Destiny 2 has ever received, but it has too many shortcomings that keep it from being a must-have.

If you stepped away from Destiny following The Final Shape, this acts as an excellent point to hop back on.

Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is a smaller, more intimate expansion compared to the usual Bungie annual release. It contains a smaller story that is more focused on new avenues to explore in the universe, while also featuring some hit/miss gameplay mechanics that work more than they don’t. It’s the right direction for the franchise and a spark of hope that better things are to come from a decade of world-building.

The Edge of Fate is Destiny 2 at both its best and worst; narratively, the writing is solid, following the stellar conclusion of last year’s The Final Shape; however the changes made to the power grind system and distinct lack of importance placed on the game’s true end game content has led to many fans releasing an SOS for Bungie to change the game, and soon. If this message isn't recieved loudly and clearly by Bungo HQ, you can guarantee a mass exodus of the player base is likely to follow, as the content offerings aren’t enough to sustain in its current state.

Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is the first chapter of the Year of Prophecy, with Bungie promising a new era for the game's universe, immediately following the completion of the Light and Dark Saga. But will it live up to expectations?

In this brave new world of Destiny, a new saga begins, and major shifts and changes alter the very systems on which the Guardians stand and progress. Unfortunately, these are changes I'm going to have to sit out until they get dialed in over the coming weeks and months. This game has been a constant in my rotation for nearly 10 years. But it now demands time that I just don't have to give, offers rewards that aren't worth the heavy investment, and promises to reset the clock and devalue that commitment every six months. The shooter part of Destiny is still excellent, but I'll check back in December and see if they've worked out the looter bit.

Writing this review exhausted me. I was hoping a new saga of Destiny 2 might get me excited for what’s next. Instead, I’m tired. The skill to make cool stuff still exists at Bungie, but it’s being catastrophically misused. Design and mechanical changes need to be more thoroughly considered, and the entire player base needs to be brought along for the ride. If Bungie leadership is reading this part: please. Give your people the time, space, and freedom to create something incredible. They have the capacity, and they need your support. This franchise can find its footing again, but Bungie needs to get out of its own way to do so.

I’ll continue to cheer for the game to grow and expand, and I believe there’s some strong potential to this new saga focused on issues of freedom and pre-determinism. But the current thrust of this expansion just isn’t working.

Does Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate successfully start a new chapter for Destiny 2 or does it falter under the pressure of its Herculean task?

The Edge of Fate feels a little stale in the gameplay department, but plants some interesting seeds for Destiny 2's ongoing narrative.

Story aside, this would be one of Destiny 2's more forgettable campaigns. But thanks to its wide-ranging overhauls, it's become memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Building on the saga's excellent conclusion in The Final Shape, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate serves as both a mediocre epilogue and a promising but uncertain reboot. Ultimately, it's less interesting in its own right, both in terms of narrative and the sloppy use of the few new mechanics introduced.

The Edge of Fate is a desperately disappointing follow up to The Final Shape, offering little to nothing of value to the overall Destiny 2 experience. A forgettable story, lifeless new locations and joyless mechanic additions, this is a sad indictment on Bungie's current place in the industry.

With how much has changed in Destiny, it's hard to see the forest through the trees. Everything I thought I knew, from what was good to what to focus on, has been overhauled. This was initially jarring, but the longer I spend with it, the more I come to like it. Much like the start of a new show, you can tell there is something more; however, you're only left with more questions. While this explanation is small, the universe it opens is vast.

It's a new era for Destiny 2 and Bungie as a whole, and it shows with The Edge of Fate's scale. However, the execution, especially in new systems like Matterspark, leaves much to be desired.

Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate isn’t the worst expansion the looter shooter’s been given, but it’s a major step back from The Final Shape in almost every regard, mixing content that’s simply more of the same with a few experiments here and there that don’t always work out.

Despite the introduction of a well-written new character like Lodi and the presence of the Nine, the gameplay in The Edge of Fate proves to be extremely repetitive, with dull puzzles and fetch quests that slow down the action. The Desert Perpetual raid offers a few interesting ideas, but the campaign feels shallow and lacking in narrative momentum, leaving the impression of filler content.
